Affectionately named “God’s Own County” by its residents, Yorkshire is characterised by its unspoiled rugged countryside. Explore the county’s two national parks, charming towns villages, stately homes, abbey ruins, and stunning stretches of coastline. Here are some of our favourite places to visit in Yorkshire:
A stunning, ancient walled city which is steeped in extraordinary history. The city is best known for its imposing city walls and the awe-inspiring York Minster, which is one of the biggest and most beautiful gothic cathedrals ever built. Much of York appears to have been frozen in time, such as The Shambles which is a narrow, cobbled street with overhanging timber-framed houses, some of which date back to the 14th century. Aside from the history, York will offer you an excellent culinary experience, with countless independent eateries, pubs, bars, and cafés. Don’t forget to stop at one of the many teahouses on your travels.
A market and spa town with a striking railway viaduct perched on the cliffs above the River Nidd, which located a short distance from Harrogate. Knaresborough Castle and Museum is a must visit, as is Mother Shipton’s Cave which tells the tale of the famous prophetess, Mother Shipton, and is England’s oldest visitor attraction. Finish the day off by hiring one of the colourful rowing boats and soak in the beautiful surroundings!
A historic village located on the outskirts of Harrogate. Both the village itself and the Ripley Castle estate are privately owned. The village is also home to the world-famous Ripley Ice Cream! In 2014, the Tour de France passed Ripley on its way to Harrogate.
Nidderdale AONB, located on the border of Yorkshire Dales National Park, is characterised by its extensive hills and stunning moorland. Upper Nidderdale begins at the quaint market town of Pateley Bridge, which is a perfect base for exploring the countryside. The huge expanses of land make Nidderdale the perfect place to enjoy cycling, walking, running, and pony trekking.
Located amongst the rolling hills of Nidderdale, this quaint town is a perfect base from which to explore the vast countryside of Nidderdale AONB. The town is also home to a number of fantastic shops, eateries and pubs which are situated within historic buildings, making the high street one of the most picturesque in the area.
